History

The Cass County was formed in 1846 from parts of Bowie County. It was named after Lewis Cass (1782-1866), a U.S. Senator from Michigan, who advocated the admission of Texas to the United States.

In 1861, the County was renamed in Davis County, Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. After the period of reconstruction after the Civil War, it was again renamed in Cass County.
