Atlanta is an American small town in Cass County in the state of Texas and is the most populous city and the economic center of Cass County.

Geography

Atlanta is located almost in the extreme northeast Texas, located 11 km west of the border with Louisiana, and covers an area of 28.7 km ², of which 0.3 km ² water surface. Southwest of the city of the U.S. Highway 59 intersect with State Highways 43 and 77 as well as several farm roads.

History

Atlanta was founded in 1871 during the railway construction by the Texas and Pacific Railway, and to the city of Atlanta, Georgia, named the place of origin of most of the first settlers. In the same year, the first post office was opened. In 1885 the town had 1,500 inhabitants, and several shops and a weekly newspaper, the Citizens ' Journal. By 1890, the timber industry was the most important industry.

As a result of the Great Depression of the population decreased and the number of transactions. From 1935, the effects of the Depression were softened by oil discoveries and oil production by the Rodessa oilfield. In the years that followed, both the population and the number of transactions rose again in 1940 and the first hospital was opened.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 5,745 people in Atlanta; were counted 2,254 households and 1,571 families. The population density was 203 inhabitants per km ². There 2,556 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 68.1 % White, 29.2 % African American, 0.5 % Native American, 0.4 % Asian and 0.5 % from other ethnic groups; 1.3 % stated that the lineage of several ethnicities. 1.7 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,254 households out of which 32.9 % have children living with them. 47.0 % were married couples living together, 18.6 % had a female householder with no husband, and 30.3% were non-families. 27.7 % of all households and 14.5% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size 2.98.

The population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.7 % from 18 to 24, 24.0% 25-44 years, 21.4% from 45 to 64 years and 19.0 % of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 83.7 males per 100 adult women aged 18 and over, there were 74.5 males.

The median income for a household (median) was $ 27,188, and the median income for a family $ 32,679. Males have a median income of $ 29,286, women $ 19,715. The per capita income was $ 14,013. Under the poverty line 19.0 % of families and 23.5 % of the population, including 33.4 % of the population under the age of 18 and 19.4 % of the population lived at the age of 65 years or older.
