Lamar County (Texas)
The Lamar County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( County Seat) is located in Paris.
Geography
The County is located in northeast Texas, bordered on the north and Oklahoma is in the east about 80 miles from Arkansas, located in the southeast about 120 km from Louisiana. It has an area of 2415 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Red River County, Delta County, Fannin County and Oklahoma to the Bryan County and Choctaw County.
History
Lamar County was formed in 1840 from parts of the Red River County. It was named after Mirabeau B. Lamar, the third President of the Republic of Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Lamar County 48 499 people in 19 077 households, and 13,468 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 82.46 percent White, 13.47 percent Black or African American, 1.08 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.17 percent from other races groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.33 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 19 077 households out of which 32.3 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.2 percent were single mothers and 29.4 percent were non-families. 26.1 percent of all households and 12.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.99 persons.
26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 to 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,609, and the median income for a family was $ 38,359. Males have a median income of $ 30,539, women $ 21,095. The per capita income was $ 17,000. 12.8 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
