Jones County (Texas)
The Jones County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Anson. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located ertwa 80 km north of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2427 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Haskell County, Shackelford County, Taylor County, Fisher County and Stonewall County.
History
Jones County was formed in 1858 from parts of Bexar County and Bosque County. It was named for Anson Jones, the fifth president of the Republic of Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Jones County 20,785 people in 6,140 households and 4,525 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 78.80 percent White, 11.51 percent Black or African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 7.46 percent from other races groups; 1.27 percent were descended from two or more races. 20.91 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,140 households out of which 33.4 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 59.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers and 26.3 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent of all households and 13.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.06.
22.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.1 percent between 18 to 24, 31.5 percent between 25 and 44, 21.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 150.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 159.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,572, and the median income for a family was $ 35,391. Males have a median income of $ 26,892, women $ 17,829. The per capita income was $ 13,656. 13.1 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
