Brewster County, Texas

The Brewster County is the largest county by area in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Alpine.

Geography

The County is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas and is bordered to the south and southeast of Mexico. It has an area of ​​16,039 square kilometers, significant water surface, there is not. The county is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pecos County, Terrell County, Presidio County and Jeff Davis County.

History

Brewster County was formed in 1887 from parts of Presidio County. It was named after Henry Percy Brewster, a Minister of War of the Republic of Texas.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census, 8,866 people lived in Brewster County; were counted 3,669 households and 2,216 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made ​​up of 81.09 percent White, 1.22 percent African American, 0.85 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 13.44 percent from other races groups; 2.98 percent were descended from two or more races. 43.62 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.96.

22.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 14.8 percent between 18 to 24, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99 males and 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 98.4 males.
