McLennan County, Texas
The McLennan County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Waco.
Geography
The County is located about 80 km north-east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2746 square kilometers, of which 48 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hill County, Limestone County, Falls County, Bell County, Coryell County and Bosque County.
History
McLennan County was formed in 1850 from parts of Limestone County and Milam County. It was named for Neil McLennan, an early settler of the later County.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in McLennan County 213 517 people in 78 859 households and 52 914 families. The population density was 79 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 72.17 percent White, 15.19 percent Black or African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 1.07 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 9.21 percent from other races groups; 1.83 percent were descended from two or more races. 17.91 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 78 859 households out of which 33.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 49.7 percent were married couples living together, 13.6 percent were single mothers and 32.9 percent were non-families. 26.0 percent of all households and 9.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.
26.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 14.6 percent between 18 and 24, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44, 19.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 33,560, and the median income for a family was $ 41,414. Males have a median income of $ 30,906, women $ 21,978. The per capita income was $ 17,174. 12.4 percent of families and 17.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
