Menard County (Texas)
The Menard County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Menard.
Geography
The County is located near the geographical center of Texas and has an area of 2337 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Concho County, McCulloch County, Mason County, Kimble County and Schleicher County.
History
Menard County was formed in 1858 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after Michel Branamour Menard, the founder of Galveston.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Menard County 2,360 people in 990 households and 665 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 87.54 percent White, 0.51 percent African American, 0.64 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 9.79 percent from other races groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.69 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 990 households out of which 28.5 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers and 32.8 percent were non-families. 30.4 percent of all households and 17.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.
24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 5.3 percent between 18 to 24, 21.9 percent between 25 and 44, 26.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 24,762, and the median income for a family was $ 30,872. Males have a median income of $ 21,953, women $ 20,000. The per capita income was $ 15,987. 20.0 percent of families and 25.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
