Lamb County, Texas
The Lamb County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( County Seat) is located in Littlefield. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in northwestern Texas, is located in the west about 40 km from the border with New Mexico and has an area of 2636 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Castro County, Hale County, Hockley County, Bailey County and Parmer County.
History
Lamb County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named in the battle of San Jacinto to George A. Lamb, a soldier.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 14,709 people in Lamb County; were counted 5,360 households and 3,993 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 76.10 percent White, 4.30 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 16.95 percent from other races groups; 1.86 percent were descended from two or more races. 43.46 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,360 households out of which 35.4 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers and 25.5 percent were non-families. 23.7 percent of all households and 12.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.
29.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 to 24, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 27,898, and the median income for a family was $ 31,833. Males have a median income of $ 26,434, women $ 20,342. The per capita income was $ 15,169. 18.0 percent of families and 20.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
