Cooke County, Texas
The Cooke County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Gainesville.
Geography
The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Texas on the border with Oklahoma and has an area of 2328 km ², of which 65 km ² water surface are. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Love County, Oklahoma, Grayson County, Denton County, Wise County, and Montague County.
History
Cooke County was formed in 1848 from parts of Fannin County. It was named for William Gordon Cooke, a soldier during the Texas Revolution.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Cooke County 36 363 people in 13,643 households and 10,000 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.84 percent White, 3.06 percent African American, 1.00 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 5.16 percent from other races groups; 1.61 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.97 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,643 households out of which 33.9 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 59.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent of all households and 11.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.07.
27.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 to 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 37,649, and the median income for a family was $ 44,869. Males have a median income of $ 32,429, women $ 22,065. The per capita income was $ 17,889. 10.9 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
