Hays County, Texas
The Hays County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( County Seat) is located in San Marcos.
Geography
The County is located about 100 km south-east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 1761 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Travis County, Caldwell County, Guadalupe County, Comal County and Blanco County.
History
Paläoindianer were the original inhabitants of the area around 6000 AD. Tonkawa Indians were concerned with agriculture already 1200 BC
Hays County was formed in 1848 from parts of Travis County. It was named for John Coffee Hays, a Texas Ranger and leading military officer in the Mexican-American War.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Hays County 97 589 people in 33 410 households, and 22,150 families. The population density was 56 people per km ². The racial the population was made up of 78.92 percent White, 3.68 percent African American, 0.69 percent Native American, 0.79 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 13.36 percent from other races groups; 2.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 29.57 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 33 410 households out of which 34.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 53.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 33.7 percent were non-families. 21.0 percent of all households and 4.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.21 persons.
24.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 20.5 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 19.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 7.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 101.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 45,006, and the median income for a family was $ 56,287. Males have a median income of $ 35,209, women $ 27,334. The per capita income was $ 19,931. 6.4 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
