Henderson County (Texas)
The Henderson County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Athens.
Geography
The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Texas, both located 120km from Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. It has an area of 2458 square kilometers, of which 194 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Kaufman County, Smith County, Cherokee County, Anderson County, Navarro County and Ellis County.
History
Henderson County was formed in 1846 from parts of Houston County and Nacogdoches County. It was named for James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas after it became part of the United States.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000, lived in Henderson County 73 277 people in 28,804 households and 20,969 families. The population density was 32 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.50 percent White, 6.61 percent African American, 0.54 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 2.72 percent from other races groups; 1.30 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.92 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 28,804 households out of which 29.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers and 27.2 percent were non-families. 23.7 percent of all households and 11.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.94.
24.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24, 25.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,533, and the median income for a family was $ 38,255. Males have a median income of $ 31,847, women $ 21,650. The per capita income was $ 17,772. 11.7 percent of families and 15.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
