Irion County, Texas

The Irion County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Mertzon.

Geography

The County is located about 80 km west of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2724 square kilometers, without significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Sterling County, Tom Green County, Schleicher County, Crockett County and Reagan County.

History

Irion County was formed in 1889 from parts of Tom Green County. It was named for Robert Anderson Irion, a Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Texas.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in Irion County 1,771 people in 694 households and 523 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer.
