Hardeman County (Texas)

The Hardeman County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Quanah.

Geography

The County is located in North Texas, on the border with Oklahoma and has an area of 1805 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the two counties Harmon County and Jackson County in Oklahoma and the following counties in Texas: Wilbarger County, Foard County, Cottle County Childress County.

History

Hardeman County was formed in 1858 from parts of Fannin County. It was named after Bailey Hardeman and Thomas Jones Hardeman, two early Texas politicians.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 4,724 people in Hardeman County. Of these, 67 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 1,943 households and 1,319 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.4 percent white, 4.8 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian, and 7.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. 14.5 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,943 households out of which 29.9 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 54.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers and 32.1 percent were non-families. 29.5 percent of all households and 18.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97.

25.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 to 24, 22.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 20.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 28,312, and the median income for a family was $ 33,325. Males have a median income of $ 26,683, women $ 18,566. The per capita income was $ 16,824. 14.6 percent of families and 17.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
