Refugio County, Texas
The Refugio County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Refugio.
Geography
The County is located in southeast Texas, about 30 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2120 square kilometers, of which 125 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Victoria County, Calhoun County, Aransas County, San Patricio County, Bee County and Goliad County.
History
Refugio County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named in the vicinity of the later County to the Nuestra Señora del Refugio Mission.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 7,828 people in Refugio County in 2985 households and 2,176 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 80.22 percent White, 6.77 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 10.42 percent from other races groups; 1.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 44.58 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,985 households out of which 31.6 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 12.8 percent were single mothers and 27.1 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent of all households and 11.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.07.
26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.4 percent between 18 to 24, 25.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,986, and the median income for a family was $ 36,162. Males have a median income of $ 29,667, women $ 16,565. The per capita income was $ 15,481. 14.3 percent of families and 17.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
