Matagorda County, Texas
The Matagorda County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Bay City.
Geography
The County is located in southwest Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 4176 square kilometers, of which 1289 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Brazoria County, Jackson County and Wharton County.
History
Matagorda County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named after the Spanish word for the big bushes that grow along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Matagorda County 37 957 people in 13,901 households and 9,925 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 67.83 percent White, 12.72 percent Black or African American, 0.67 percent Native American, 2.38 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 13.98 percent from other races groups; 2.38 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.35 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,901 households out of which 36.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 53.8 percent were married couples living together, 12.7 percent were single mothers and 28.6 percent were non-families. 25.1 percent of all households and 10.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.25 persons.
30.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 to 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 21.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,174, and the median income for a family was $ 40,586. Males have a median income of $ 37,733, women $ 21,871. The per capita income was $ 15,709. 14.9 percent of families and 18.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
