The Matagorda County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Bay City.

Geography

The County is located in southwest Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​4176 square kilometers, of which 1289 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Brazoria County, Jackson County and Wharton County.

History

Matagorda County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named after the Spanish word for the big bushes that grow along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in Matagorda County 37 957 people in 13,901 households and 9,925 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer.
