Floyd County (Texas)
The Floyd County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Floydada.
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Texas and is in the northeast around 90 km from Oklahoma and west about 120 km from New Mexico. It has an area of 2571 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Briscoe County, Motley County, Crosby County, Hale County, and Swisher County.
History
Floyd County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. It was named for Dolphin Ward Floyd, a defender of the Alamo.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Floyd County 7,771 people in 2,730 households and 2,110 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 74.16 percent White, 3.38 percent African American, 0.76 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 19.66 percent from other races groups; 1.81 percent were descended from two or more races. 45.93 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,730 households out of which 39.4 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 63.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers and 22.7 percent were non-families. 21.3 percent of all households and 12.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.26 persons.
31.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.4 percent between 18 to 24, 24.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 26,851, and the median income for a family was $ 32,123. Males have a median income of $ 25,487, women $ 18,929. The per capita income was $ 14,206. 19.5 percent of families and 21.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
