Cameron County (Texas)

The Cameron County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Brownsville.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme southeast Texas, on the south by Mexico and on the east by the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of 3306 square kilometers, of which 960 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Willacy County and Hidalgo County.

Fauna

Cameron County is home to the largest part of the U.S. ocelot population. This is the subspecies L. p. albescens, which only occurs in southern Texas and northeastern Mexico and whose total population is estimated at fewer than 250 animals. History

Cameron County was formed in 1848 from parts of Nueces County. It was named after Ewen Cameron, a soldier during the Texas Revolution.

Demographic data

The average age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,155, and the median income for a family was $ 27,853. Males had a median income of $ 22,755, women $ 18,182. The per capita income was $ 10,960. 28.2 percent of families and 33.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
