The Dickens County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Dickens.
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Texas and is in the northeast about 80 km from the state of Oklahoma away. It has an area of 2344 km ², of which 3 km ² water surface are. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Motley County, King County, Kent County and Crosby County.
History
Dickens County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after J. Dickens, a defender of the Alamo.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 2,762 people in Dickens County in 980 households and 638 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 77.62 percent White, 8.18 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.25 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 12.35 percent from other races groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. 23.90 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 980 households out of which 23.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 54.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers and 34.8 percent were non-families. 32.4 percent of all households and 17.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.89 persons.
18.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.4 percent between 18 to 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 19.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 130.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 141.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 25,898, and the median income for a family was $ 32,500. Males had a median income of $ 25,000, women $ 18,571. The per capita income was $ 13,156. 14.1 percent of families and 17.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
