Brown County (Texas)

The Brown County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Brownwood.

Geography

The County is located near the geographical center of Texas and has an area of ​​2478 square kilometers, of which 34 km ² are covered with water. The county is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Eastland County, Comanche County, Mills County, San Saba County, McCulloch County, Coleman County and Callahan County.

History

Brown County was formed in 1856 from parts of Comanche County and Travis County. It was named for Henry Stevenson Brown, commander at the Battle of Velasco.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 37 674 people in Brown County; it was counted 14,306 households, and 10,014 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made ​​up of 87.35 percent White, 4.01 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 6.07 percent from other races groups; 1.66 percent were descended from two or more races. 15.38 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

25.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.1 percent between 18 to 24, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males.
