Hartley County, Texas
The Hartley County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Channing.
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle, on the border with New Mexico and about 40 km from the border with Oklahoma away. It has an area of 3790 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dallam County, Moore County, Oldham County and in New Mexico at the Quay County and Union County.
History
Hartley County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. It was named after Oliver Cromwell Hartley and Rufus K. Hartley, two early Texas lawyers and Gesetzesentwerfern.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Hartley County 5,537 people in 1,604 households and 1,220 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 81.07 percent White, 8.15 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 8.60 percent from other races groups; 1.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 13.69 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,604 households out of which 35.5 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 68.9 percent were married couples living together, 4.7 percent were single mothers and 23.9 percent were non-families. 21.6 percent of all households and 11.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.98.
20.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 4.7 percent between 18 to 24, 35.7 percent between 25 and 44, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 154.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 172.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 46,327, and the median income for a family was $ 53,004. Males had a median income of $ 29,783, women $ 21,783. The per capita income was $ 18,067. 3.7 percent of families and 6.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
