McCulloch County, Texas
The McCulloch County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Brady.
Geography
The County is located near the geographical center of Texas and has an area of 2780 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Coleman County, Brown County, San Saba County, Mason County, Menard County and Concho County.
History
McCulloch County was formed in 1856 from parts of Bexar County. It was named Ranger and later General of the Confederate Army after Benjamin McCulloch, a Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in McCulloch County 8,205 people in 3,277 households and 2,267 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 84.64 percent White, 1.57 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 11.71 percent from other races groups; 1.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 27.04 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,277 households out of which 30.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers and 30.8 percent were non-families. 28.2 percent of all households and 15.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.
26.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.6 percent between 18 to 24, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 19.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86 men.
The median income for a household was $ 25,705, and the median income for a family was $ 30,783. Males have a median income of $ 25,844, women $ 18,337. The per capita income was $ 14,579. 17.3 percent of families and 22.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
