Zavala County, Texas
The Zavala County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county administration is Crystal City.
Geography
The County is located about 130 km south of the geographic center of Texas and is bordered to the southwest by Mexico. It has an area of 3371 square kilometers, of which 8 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Uvalde County, Frio County, Dimmit County and Maverick County.
History
Zavala County was formed in 1858 from parts of Maverick County. It was named for Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican rancher who had been one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence and was the first Vice President of the Republic of Texas.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Zavala County 11,600 people in 3,428 households and 2,807 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 65.06 percent White, 0.49 percent African American, 0.59 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 31.08 percent from other races groups; 2.66 percent were descended from two or more races. 91.22 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,428 households out of which 43.8 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 21.8 percent were single mothers and 18.1 percent were non-families. 16.6 percent of all households and 9.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.28 and the average family size was 3.70 persons.
34.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.2 percent between 18 to 24, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44, 18.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 16,844, and the median income for a family was $ 19,418. Males have a median income of $ 22,045, women $ 14,416. The per capita income was $ 10,034. 37.4 percent of families and 41.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
