Hale County (Texas)
The Hale County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Plainview. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Texas, about 80 kilometers from New Mexico and has an area of 2602 square kilometers, without significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Swisher County, Floyd County, Lubbock County, Lamb County and Castro County.
History
Hale County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after John C. Hale, a lieutenant at the battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Hale County 36 602 people in 11,975 households and 9,136 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 66.77 percent White, 5.79 percent African American, 0.92 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 23.76 percent from other races groups; 2.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 47.90 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,975 households out of which 40.4 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 60.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers and 23.7 percent were non-families. 21.0 percent of all households and 10.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.32 persons.
30.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44, 18.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,280, and the median income for a family was $ 35,250. Males have a median income of $ 26,007, women $ 20,057. The per capita income was $ 13,655. 14.3 percent of families and 18.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
