Haskell County (Texas)
The Haskell County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Haskell.
Geography
The County is located north of the geographic center of Texas, about 100 km from the border with Oklahoma and has an area of 2358 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Knox County, Throckmorton County, Shackelford County, Jones County and Stonewall County.
History
Haskell County was formed in 1858 from parts of Fannin County and Milam County. It was named after Charles Ready Haskell, a soldier who fell in the massacre of Goliad during the Texas Revolution.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Haskell County 6,093 people in 2,569 households and 1,775 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 82.78 percent White, 2.79 percent African American, 0.54 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 11.67 percent from other races groups; 2.05 percent were descended from two or more races. 20.50 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,569 households out of which 27.4 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers and 30.9 percent were non-families. 29.4 percent of all households and 18.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.86 persons.
23.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.7 percent between 18 and 24, 22.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 25.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 23,690, and the median income for a family was $ 29,506. Males have a median income of $ 23,542, women $ 16,418. The per capita income was $ 14,918. 16.9 percent of families and 22.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
