Comanche County (Texas)
The Comanche County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Comanche.
Geography
The County is located about 50 km north-east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2454 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Erath County, Hamilton County, Mills County, Brown County and Eastland County.
History
Comanche County was formed in 1856 from parts of Bosque County and Coryell County. It was named after the Comanches, an Indian people.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 14,026 people in Comanche County; were counted 5,522 households and 3,926 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 87.30 percent White, 0.44 percent African American, 0.61 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 9.70 percent from other races groups; 1.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 20.88 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,522 households out of which 29.8 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers and 28.9 percent were non-families. 26.3 percent of all households and 15.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98.
25.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.1 percent between 18 to 24, 23.3 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 20.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,422, and the median income for a family was $ 34,810. Males have a median income of $ 26,094, women $ 18,912. The per capita income was $ 14,677. 13.9 percent of families and 17.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
