Brooks County (Texas)
The Brooks County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Falfurrias.
Geography
The County is located south-southeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 70 km north of the Mexican border and 60 km west from the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of 2444 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jim Wells County, Kleberg County, Kenedy County, Hidalgo County, Starr County, Jim Hogg County and Duval County.
History
Brooks County was formed in 1911 from parts of Starr County. It was named after John Abijah Brooks, a Texas Ranger.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Brooks County 7,976 people in 2,711 households and 2,079 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 75.84 percent White, 0.19 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 21.58 percent from other races groups; 1.77 percent were descended from two or more races. 91.57 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,711 households out of which 38.9 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 52.2 percent were married couples living together, 19.1 percent were single mothers and 23.3 percent were non-families. 21.4 percent of all households and 11.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.38 persons.
31.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 to 24, 23.4 percent between 25 and 44, 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 18,622, and the median income for a family was $ 22,473. Males have a median income of $ 23,051, women $ 16,103. The per capita income was $ 10,234. 36.9 percent of families and 40.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
