Van Zandt County, Texas
The Van Zandt County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Canton. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located about 200 km north-east of the geographic center of Texas and is in the north about 80 km before the border with Oklahoma and in the east about 100 miles from Arkansas away. It has an area of 2226 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Rains County, Wood County, Smith County, Henderson County, Kaufman County, and Hunt County.
History
Van Zandt County was formed in 1848 from parts of Henderson County. It was named after Isaac Van Zandt, an early settler, who gained as a prosecutor and Congress Member of Texas fame.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Van Zandt County 48 140 people in 18,195 households and 13,664 families. The population density was 22 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 91.96 percent White, 2.94 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.71 percent from other races groups; 1.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.65 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 18,195 households out of which 31.8 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 62.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers and 24.9 percent were non-families. 22.0 percent of all households and 11.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.01.
25.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 to 24, 25.2 percent between 25 and 44, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97 males and 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 35,029, and the median income for a family was $ 41,175. Males had a median income of $ 31,887, women $ 21,344. The per capita income was $ 16,930. 10.3 percent of families and 13.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
