Canton is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Van Zandt County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the center of the county in northeastern Texas, about 110 km north- west of Dallas, at the Texas State Routes 19 and 64, and has a total area of 13.4 km ², of which 1.1 km ² water surface.

History

Canton was 1850, the first place in this area, which was founded. It was named after Old Canton in Smith County, the place of origin of the first settlers. In the same year, the first courthouse was built and a post office, the fourth in the county opened.

1853 opened the first school to Canton Academy, its doors and in 1860 appeared the first weekly newspaper, the Canton Weekly Times. 1880 James S. Hogg, who was district attorney for many years, as governor of Texas.

The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size amounted to 2.87.

21.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 % from 18 to 24, 24.2% 25-44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 25.9 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 83.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 32,098, and the median income for a family $ 42,500. Males have a median income of $ 32,117 versus $ 20,598 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,351. 11.3 % of the population and 7.9 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 10.6 % have children under the age of 18 and 10.9% of those 65 or older.
