DeWitt County (Texas)
The DeWitt County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Cuero.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas and is in the southeast about 100 km from the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of 2358 km ², of which 3 km ² water surface are. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lavaca County, Victoria County, Goliad County, Karnes County and Gonzales County.
History
DeWitt County was formed in 1846 from parts of Goliad County Gonzales County and Victoria County as well. It was named for Green DeWitt, the founder of one of the first colonies in Texas.
Economy
Since 2008, running in the County preparations for the exploitation of oil shale (Eagle Ford Shale ). It's an oil boom as expected beginning of the 20th century.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in DeWitt County 20.013 people; were counted 7,207 households and 5,131 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 76.42 percent White, 11.04 percent Black or African American, 0.54 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 10.01 percent from other races groups; 1.75 percent were descended from two or more races. 27.24 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,207 households out of which 31.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 11.8 percent were single mothers and 28.8 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent of all households and 15.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.04 persons.
23.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 to 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,714, and the median income for a family was $ 33,513. Males have a median income of $ 27,134, women $ 18,370. The per capita income was $ 14,780. 15.3 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
