Harris County (Texas)
The Harris County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas to the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Houston.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas, is part of the Houston - Sugar Land - Baytown Metropolitan Area and is about 35 km from the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of 4604 square kilometers, of which 127 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County, Liberty County, Chambers County, Galveston County, Brazoria County, Fort Bend County, and Waller County.
History
Harris County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named for John Richardson Harris, an early settler of the later County.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 3,400,578 people in Harris County in 1,205,516 households and 834,217 families. The population density was 759 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 58.73 percent White, 18.49 percent Black or African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 5.14 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 14.18 percent from other races groups; 2.96 percent were descended from two or more races. 32.93 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,205,516 households out of which 37.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 50.6 percent were married couples living together, 13.7 percent were single mothers and 30.8 percent were non-families. 25.1 percent of all households and 5.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.38 persons.
29.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 to 24, 33.4 percent between 25 and 44, 19.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 7.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97 men.
The median income for a household was $ 42,598, and the median income for a family was $ 49,004. Males had a median income of $ 37,361, women $ 28,941. The per capita income was $ 21,435. 12.1 percent of families and 14.97 % of the population were below the poverty line.
