Highlands is a city and CDP in Harris County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in southeast Texas, in the east of the county, 58 km from the Gulf to the east is about 110 miles from Louisiana, in the southeast of Mexico and has a total area of which 1.0 km ² water surface of 17.0 km ².

History

Named after the place was its location on the San Jacinto River, as the east bank of the river was higher than the west bank. 1908 got the place by the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway connection to the railway network in 1929 and the first post office was opened.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 7,089 people in 2,564 households and 1,976 families. The population density was 443.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 90.18 % White, 1.61 % African American, 0.51 % Native American, 0.39 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 5.28 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.00% were of mixed descent, and 13.01% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,564 households, 37.3 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7 % were married couples living together. 11.9% were single mothers and 22.9 % were non-families. 19.4 % of all households were single-person households and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size amounted to 3.14.

27.8 % of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 % from 18 to 24, 29.4 % 25-44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 96.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 41,288, and the median income for a family $ 49,655. Males have a median income of $ 41,926 versus $ 25,226 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,556. 9.8 % of the population and 6.7 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 13.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 or older.
