Hamilton County (Texas)
The Hamilton County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Hamilton.
Geography
The County is located about 60 kilometers east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2166 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Erath County, Bosque County, Coryell County, Lampasas County, Mills County and Comanche County.
History
Hamilton County was formed in 1856 from parts of Bosque County, Comanche County and Lampasas County. It was named for James Hamilton Jr., the 28th Governor of South Carolina.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 8,229 people in Hamilton County in 3374 households and 2,324 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.81 percent White, 0.15 percent African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 4.36 percent from other races groups; 1.05 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.41 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,374 households out of which 27.4 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers and 31.1 percent were non-families. 28.4 percent of all households and 17.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.89 persons.
23.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.0 percent between 18 to 24, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 23.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,150, and the median income for a family was $ 39,494. Males had a median income of $ 26,703, women $ 20,192. The per capita income was $ 16,800. 10.6 percent of families and 14.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
