Hamilton is a city and the county seat of Hamilton County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The town is located just east of the geographic center of Texas at the junction of U.S. Highway 281 to the Highway 22 and 36 and the Farm Roads 218 and 932 in the center of the county. The town has a total area of 7.5 km ², of which 0.2 km ² water surface.

History

The town was founded and named after James Hamilton, a Governor of South Carolina in 1858. Three years later, the first post office was established and in 1873 the population had risen to 200.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,977 people in 1,227 households and 779 families. The population density was 406.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 95.13 % White, 0.07 % African American, 0.17 % Native American, 0.34 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 3.29% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.01% were Mixed Race and 6.75 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,227 households, 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.7 % were married couples living together. 10.4% were single mothers and 36.5 % were non-families. 34.2 % of all households were single-person households, and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size amounted to 3.00.

25.8 % of the population were under 18 years old, 6.3 % from 18 to 24, 23.5% 25-44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 23.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 77.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,585, and the median income for a family $ 38,702. Males had a median income of $ 27,074 versus $ 17,500 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,012. 15.9 % of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 23.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 16.1 % of those 65 or older.
