Franklin County (Texas)
The Franklin County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Mount Vernon. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Texas and about 40 km from the border with the State of Oklahoma. It has an area of 763 square kilometers, of which 24 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Red River County, Titus County, Camp County, Wood County and Hopkins County.
History
Franklin County was formed in 1875 from parts of Titus County. It was named after Benjamin Cromwell Franklin, an early jurists, judges and Gesetzesentwerfer the Republic of Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Franklin County, 9,458 people in 3,754 households and 2,732 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 89.19 percent White, 3.94 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, and 5.14 percent from other races; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.90 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,754 households out of which 30.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 27.2 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent of all households and 12.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.
24.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 to 24, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,955, and the median income for a family was $ 37,064. Males have a median income of $ 28,806, women $ 19,361. The per capita income was $ 17,563. 12.5 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
