Martin County (Texas)
The Martin County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Stanton.
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Texas, about 50 miles off the southeastern tip of New Mexico and has an area of 2371 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dawson County, Howard County, Glasscock County, Midland County and Andrews County.
History
Martin County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named for Wylie Martin, an early settler in Texas. The settlement was driven mainly by the Texas and Pacific Railway, which sold from 1881 parcels of land to farmers in order to develop the country. The farms built on mainly grain, cotton, vegetables and wine. While in the field of animal husbandry around 1890 still prevailed sheep farming, this became less important in favor of cattle, the number of the Round of something tenfold over 3,000 in 1890 to 32,000 in 1900.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Martin County 4,746 people in 1,624 households and 1,256 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 79.01 percent White, 1.58 percent African American, 0.82 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, and 16.06 percent from other races; 2.36 percent were descended from two or more races. 40.56 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,624 households out of which 42.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 64.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers and 22.6 percent were non-families. 21.7 percent of all households and 11.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.36 persons.
33.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.7 percent between 18 to 24, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44, 19.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,836, and the median income for a family was $ 35,965. Males have a median income of $ 29,360, women $ 19,063. The per capita income was $ 15,647. 14.9 percent of families and 18.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
