Ellis County (Texas)
The Ellis County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Waxahachie.
Geography
The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Texas and about 120 km south of the border with the State of Oklahoma. It has an area of 2465 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dallas County, Kaufman County, Henderson County, Navarro County, Hill County and Johnson County.
History
Ellis County was formed in 1849 from parts of Navarro County. It was named for Richard Ellis, a Texas politician.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 111 360 people in Ellis County. Of these, 1,933 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants living in 37 020 households, and 29,653 families. The population density was 46 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 80.63 percent White, 8.64 percent African American, 0.59 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 7.90 percent from other races groups; 1.86 percent were descended from two or more races. 18.42 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 37 020 households out of which 42.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 64.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers and 19.9 percent were non-families. 16.6 percent of all households and 6.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.31 persons.
30.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.3 percent between 18 to 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64, and 9.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 50,350, and the median income for a family was $ 55,358. Males have a median income of $ 37,613, women $ 26,612. The per capita income was $ 20,212. 6.8 percent of families and 8.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
