Fayette County (Texas)
The Fayette County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in La Grange.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2486 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lee County, Washington County, Austin County, Colorado County, Lavaca County, Gonzales County, Caldwell County and Bastrop County.
History
Fayette County was formed in 1837 from parts of Bastrop County. It was named after Marie -Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, a French hero during the American Revolution.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000, lived in Fayette County 21,804 people in 8,722 households and 6,044 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 84.58 percent White, 7.01 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 6.66 percent from other races groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. 12.78 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,722 households out of which 28.5 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 7.8 percent were single mothers and 30.7 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent of all households and 16.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.97.
23.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 to 24, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 22.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91 men.
The median income for a household was $ 34,526, and the median income for a family was $ 43,156. Males had a median income of $ 29,008, women $ 20,859. The per capita income was $ 18,888. 8.1 percent of families and 11.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
