Mitchell County (Texas)
The Mitchell County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Colorado City.
Geography
The County is located about 100 km north-west of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2372 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Scurry County, Nolan County, Coke County, Sterling County and Howard County.
History
Mitchell County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after the Texas Revolution Asa Mitchell and Eli Mitchell, two early settlers and soldiers.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Mitchell County 9,698 people in 2,837 households and 1,997 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 74.52 percent White, 12.81 percent Black or African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 10.19 percent from other races groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.03 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,837 households out of which 30.6 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers and 29.6 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent of all households and 15.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
19.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.5 percent between 18 and 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 159.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 174.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 25,399, and the median income for a family was $ 31,481. Males have a median income of $ 23,750, women $ 20,221. The per capita income was $ 14,043. 15.0 percent of families and 17.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
