Mitchell County (Texas)

The Mitchell County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Colorado City.

Geography

The County is located about 100 km north-west of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2372 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Scurry County, Nolan County, Coke County, Sterling County and Howard County.

History

Mitchell County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after the Texas Revolution Asa Mitchell and Eli Mitchell, two early settlers and soldiers.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in Mitchell County 9,698 people in 2,837 households and 1,997 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer.
