Karnes County, Texas

The Karnes County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Karnes City.

Geography

The County is located about 200 km south-east of the geographic center of Texas and about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of ​​1952 square kilometers, of which 8 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gonzales County, DeWitt County, Goliad County, Bee County, Live Oak County, Atascosa County, and Wilson County.

History

Karnes County was formed in 1854 from parts of Bexar County, DeWitt County, Goliad County, Gonzales County and San Patricio County. It was named after Henry Wax Karnes, a soldier in the Texas Revolution.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in Karnes County 15,446 people in 4,454 households and 3,246 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. 21.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.5 percent between 18 to 24, 34.2 percent between 25 and 44, 18.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 146.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 162.5 males.
