Flatonia is a city in Fayette County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.
Geography
The city is located on Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 90 between the cities of Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Victoria in the southwest of the county in the central southeast Texas, on the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad and has a total area of 4.2 km ² without appreciable water surface.
History
The town was founded in 1874 and named after FW Flato, one of the first distributors in the wider area.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 1,377 people in 504 households and 347 families. The population density was 328.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 74.07 % White, 7.48 % African American, 0.94 % Native American, 0.00 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 16.85% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 0.65% were of mixed descent, and 36.17 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 504 households 33.3 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.4 % were married couples living together. 11.9% were single mothers and 31.0 % were non-families. 27.4 % of all households were single-person households, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size amounted to 3.21.
26.9 % of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 % from 18 to 24, 25.4% 25-44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.0 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 91.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 27,000, and the median income for a family $ 31,471. Males have a median income of $ 23,700 versus $ 16,429 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,329. 23.4 % of the population and 18.9 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 33.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 27.4 % of those 65 or older.
