Abernathy is a town in Hale County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the northwest of Texas, is in the west about 90 miles from New Mexico away, far South in the Lubbock County in and has an area of 3.1 km ². Abernathy is on the north -south running Interstate 27

History

Abernathy was founded in 1909 as a railroad town when the Santa Fe Railroad was built from Plainview to Lubbock. Was named the settlement after MG Abernathy. 1910, she received the first post office, and in 1914 the city had 300 inhabitants, four churches, several shops and a bank. In 1924 she was registered as a town, and in 1926 there were already 45 shops and 1500 inhabitants; Abernathy became known as cotton and grain center.

1929 Abernathy was connected to the national power grid and 1934 to the water supply. In the years 1933 to 1946, the population was declining. In 1947 there was the first oil discoveries in the area, and the population rose to 1962 in the early 1950s.
