New York (Texas)

New York is a small town in the east of Henderson County in the U.S. state of Texas. The location is situated 18 kilometers east of Athens.

Founded in 1856, the place was since 1873 the present location of the village is built on. The place was named after New York City. 1884, the place was so far grown that he ( from 1876 until the 1900s ) was home to a population of 60 people, two steam-powered grist mills, cotton processing, two churches, a school and a post office. 1892, the population had grown to 100 people. After 1901, the railway line ran past far at the site, the development of the town was a stop. In 1936 the school was merged with the in Poynor. 1992 there was still a Baptist church in a population of 20 people. In 2000, the population was still 15 people.
