Menard is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of Menard County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies on the San Saba River, some southwest of the geographical center of Texas, at the junction of U.S. Highway 83 with U.S. Highway 190 and has a total area of 5.3 km ² without significant water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,653 people in 666 households and 438 families. The population density was 309.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 84.94 % White, 0.67 % African American, 0.60 % Native American, 0.36 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 11.98% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.39% were of mixed descent, and 39.32 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 666 households, 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.2 % were married couples living together. 10.8% were single mothers and 34.1% were non-families. 31.4 % of all households were single-person households, and 20.0 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size amounted to 3.03.

27.2% of the population were under 18 years old, 6.0 % from 18 to 24, 23.7% 25-44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 87.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 19,698, and the median income for a family $ 27,125. Males had a median income of $ 21,094 versus $ 17,857 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,768. 33.1 % of the population and 26.5 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 45.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 28.2 % of those 65 or older.
