West is a city in McLennan County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States of America. It has 2,674 inhabitants (as of 2010).
Geography
West is located at the latitude 31 ° 48'12 "N and longitude 97 ° 5'35" W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 4.0 km ². West is located approximately 40 km north of Waco and 120 km south of Dallas. Most of the city is also situated on the east side of Interstate 35 and the Union Pacific Railroad.
History
West was settled in 1840 and 1892 appointed to the city. It was named after the, former landowner Thomas West ( 1834-1912 ). The city is located five kilometers south of the place where in 1896 the railway accident Crush was staged. On 15 February 2009, the Ash Creek meteorite fall occurred near the city. On the evening of April 17 2013, a very serious explosion occurred in the fertilizer warehouse the west Fertilizer Company. In the explosion, 15 people died and 200 were injured. The explosion destroyed a great part of town, about 60 to 80 buildings were destroyed or damaged. Also a Elementary School and West Middle School were almost completely destroyed. A majority of the victims were firefighters and volunteers who rushed to help the people.
Education
The city is part of the West Independent School District with the West High School Athletics and its team the Trojans. The West Middle School exploded by a gas leak as a result of the explosion in the fertilizer stock.
