Hewitt is a city in McLennan County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in east-central Texas, just west of Countyzentrums, 14 km west of Waco and has a total area of 17.9 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Established the place was 1882, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad laid its tracks here. Was named the place after George A. Hewitt, a railway director.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 11,085 people in 3,931 households and 3,223 families. The population density was 621.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 84.08 % White, 7.70 % African American, 0.42 % Native American, 2.35 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 4.02 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.37% were of mixed descent, and 9.28 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,931 households, 45.6 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 68.3 % were married couples living together. 10.9% were single mothers and 18.0 % were non-families. 14.2 % of all households were single-person households and 3.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3,12 people.

29.9% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 % from 18 to 24, 33.0 % 25-44, 22.8 % from 45 to 64, and 6.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 91.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 55,469, and the median income for a family $ 59,409. Males have a median income of $ 38,560 versus $ 24,659 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,263. 2.9 % of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 3.1 % have children under the age of 18 and 4.0 % of those 65 or older.
