Canadian is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Hemphill County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in North Texas, in the northeast of the Texas Panhandle, about 50 miles from Oklahoma is in the east about 40 km to the north stations, on the U.S. Highways 60 and 83, in the west of the county on the south bank of the Canadian River, shortly before the confluence of the Red Deer Creeks and has a total area of 3.3 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Canadian since its inception in 1887, the county seat. The result is the city built by the spring of the same year supply depot Kansas Railway Townsite Company and by the construction of a bridge over the Canadian River by the Southern Kansas Railway. In result, many people moved to this side of the river, because they had a better connection here and better business expected.

On August 4, 1888 one of the first rodeo of Texas was played here and has been an annual venue as part of the nationwide competitions.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 2233 people in 869 households and 625 families. The population density was 668.3 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 88.94 % White, 0.22 % African American, 0.76 % Native American, 0.13 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 9.00 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 0.90% were of mixed descent, and 18.76 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 869 households 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9 % were married couples living together. 7.6 % had a female householder with no husband, and 28.0% were non-families. 26.1 % of all households were single-person households, and 13.5 % had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size amounted to 3.04.

27.5 % of the population were under 18 years old, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.8 % 25-44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.5 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 87.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 31,929, and the median income for a family $ 38,676. Males have a median income of $ 30,240 versus $ 17,083 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,384. 14.1 % of the population and 12.3 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 19.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 16.4 % of those 65 or older.
