Fairfield is the county seat and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Freestone County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies at the intersection of Interstate 45 with U.S. Highway 75 and 84 in the center of the county in east-central Texas and has a total area of 11.7 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Established was the place with the name of Mound Prairie, but renamed in 1850 when the town was the county seat.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,094 people in 1,235 households and 791 families. The population density was 264.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 71.46 % White, 21.43 % African American, 0.26 % Native American, 0.68 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 4.65 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.52% were of mixed descent, and 10.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,235 households, 30.7 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.2 % were married couples living together. 13.5 % were single mothers and 35.9 % were non-families. 32.7 % of all households were single-person households, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size amounted to 3.06.

26.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8 % from 18 to 24, 25.9 % 25-44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 87.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 28,636, and the median income for a family $ 40,871. Males have a median income of $ 29,643 versus $ 15,887 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,308. 18.2 % of the population and 14.1 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 20.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 22.8 % of those 65 or older.
