Serbin, Texas

Serbin is a town in Lee County, Texas. It has 90 inhabitants ( 2000). The town was founded in the 1850s by immigrants Sorbian located about 80 km east of Austin. About 550 Wendish Lutherans from Saxony and Brandenburg settled in the 19th century under the leadership of priest Jan Kilian here. They were the first members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Texas.

Although in Serbin no more Sorbian is spoken, the residents keep alive the memory of their ancestors and maintain contacts in the old home. In the former school building of the Texas Wendish Heritage Serbin is housed museum.
