William Beck Ochiltree

William Beck Ochiltree ( born October 18, 1811 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, † December 27, 1867 in Jefferson, Texas) was an American settler, judge, and politician in Texas.

Career

Ochiltrees family lived for some time in Florida and later in Alabama, where he began to practice as a lawyer. He then moved to Nacogdoches in 1839 in the Republic of Texas and continued his activity continued as a lawyer. As a result, he was a judge of the fifth judicial district, 1844 finance ministers ( Secretary of the Treasury ) of the Republic, 1845 Adjutant General, as well as a delegate to the Convention of 1845.

After Texas had joined the United States in 1853, he ran as a Whig for the office of governor, but was defeated by Democrat Elisha M. Pease. In 1855 he was elected to the sixth Texas House of Representatives. Prior to the Civil War Ochiltree attended the Texas Secession Convention of 1861; after that he was a deputy in the provisional Congress of the Confederate States of America. But he came back after a short time, returned home to Texas and joined a regiment. His poor health forced him to resign in 1863. He then lived until his death in Jefferson.
