Perryton is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of Ochiltree County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the far north of Texas, the Texas Panhandle, on U.S. Highway 83 to the border with Oklahoma has a total area of 11.5 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The town was founded in 1919 and named after George M. Perry, an early district judge in this area.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 7,774 people in 2,785 households and 2,113 families. The population density was 677.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 85.23 % White, 0.15 % African American, 0.98 % Native American, 0.40 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 11.10% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.12% were of mixed descent, and 34.13% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,785 households, 42.3 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.6 % were married couples living together. 8.7% were single mothers and 24.1 % were non-families. 21.3 % of all households were single-person households and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size amounted to 3.22.

31.3 % of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 % from 18 to 24, 28.9 % 25-44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.3 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 94.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,363, and the median income for a family $ 45,045. Males had a median income of $ 31,803 versus $ 19,694 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,431. 13.2 % of the population and 9.7 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 18.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 10.2% of those 65 or older.
